Understanding by Design is a framework to support instruction. The main priniciples are:
  • The development of enduring student understanding
  • Essential questions
  • A definition of what students will know and be able to do
  • Assessments of student learning require pupils to explain, interpret, apply, shift perspective, empathize, and self-assess
  • Inclusion of differentiated instructional practices
Effective curriculum development reflects a three-stage design process called "backward design.”
